A popular anti-impotence drug is being sold at the GPs in the UK, but it could cost up to £500.
But an analysis by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) shows that at around the same time the NHS is seeing the cheapest prices for erectile dysfunction drugs.

But the figures from the NHS Direct analysis show that the drugs are more expensive than the NHS, as the NICE figures show.
The NICE figures were used to try to find the cheapest drugs for erectile dysfunction, which could save up to £500 on the drugs, Hildegard added.

In a separate analysis, the NHS Direct team also looked at the drugs for treating pulmonary hypertension and found that they cost around £500 for the same drugs. But there was also a further saving of £1,000 on each of the four drugs.
“The NHS Direct team was able to find a very cost-effective way to get patients to take these drugs to their GP. They were able to save £500 on a single drug for the treatment of pulmonary hypertension,” said Hildegard.
“The cost of these drugs can be a little higher in private pharmacies, but they are a much better deal than the NHS in the same way.
“There is also the potential for a patient to be given a referral for a referral to a specialist who can assess whether their condition is in need of treatment or whether they have the underlying condition that is causing their symptoms and may be able to help with treatment.”
NHS Direct has taken the advice of its medical team as to how to make the most of the drugs, with a review by the MHRA showing they are the cheapest.
“The MHRA recommends that patients who have been prescribed a single dose of Viagra, Cialis or Levitra, should go to their GP first. They should also tell their GP about their referral to a specialist for the treatment of their condition.”
Dr John Bercott, an independent doctor with the NHS Direct team, toldThe Lancet Generalthat he had previously seen a patient who had been prescribed Cialis for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
Bercott, who also works at the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), said: “The NHS currently offers a prescription for the prescription of Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra over the counter (OTC) from a pharmacy. We can only see this being as affordable as the private pharmacies.”
NICE says that they have no plans to sell the drugs, but the NICE team has made the most of their cost.
